Meet Candisse *

A woman with short brown hair, glasses, wearing a bright pink sleeveless top and black leather pants, sitting in a motorized wheelchair in front of a white wall with decorative paneling.

I’m a lifelong resident of High River, a disabled woman, a former small business owner, and someone who deeply believes in showing upβ€”especially when it’s hard.

I live with Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA), a rare neuromuscular disorder that affects my strength and mobility. I use a power wheelchair and rely on caregivers to support my independence. But what SMA hasn’t stopped me from doing is advocating, creating, and leading.

For over 10 years, I owned and operated a successful event planning company right here in townβ€”organizing everything from weddings and fundraisers to corporate events and community celebrations. I’ve also worked in the nonprofit world, supporting families living with disabilities, planning conferences across Western Canada, and helping raise tens of thousands of dollars for causes close to my heart.

In recent years, I’ve stepped more fully into advocacy and accessibility consulting. I speak to organizations and communities about what real inclusion looks likeβ€”because creating accessible spaces doesn’t just benefit people like me. It benefits seniors, parents with strollers, anyone who’s ever needed a little extra support to feel like they belong.

What I Stand For

I’m not running for council because I think I have all the answers. I’m running because I live the questions. I know what it’s like to navigate inaccessible systems, to run a business during hard times, and to feel shut out of decisions that affect your daily life.

I believe in:

βœ”οΈ Growth that doesn’t erase who we are
βœ”οΈ Affordable and inclusive housing that reflects the needs of our town
βœ”οΈ Support for small businesses as the heartbeat of our community
βœ”οΈ Accessibility that’s built inβ€”not tacked on
βœ”οΈ Transparent, respectful communication with residents

My lived experience gives me a lens that’s differentβ€”and I believe different is exactly what council needs. I’m not a politician. I’m a person who’s been paying attention, who believes in this town, and who’s ready to get to work.

You Can. We Can. High River Can.
